Tirur is a town and a municipality in Malappuram district. It is one of the most important business and tourist centers of Malappuram district. Tirur is situated 41 km south of Calicut, on the Mangalore-Madras railway line. Tirur is a major trading centre of fish, betel leaf and imported electronics( Mainly from China). Wagon Tragedy

Tirur is a witness for the heart breaking “wagon tragedy” of the 1921 rebellion as the British police carried 70 revolutionists in a fully closed airtight train wagon to pothanur in 1921 and thus killed more than fifty persons by asphyxation.The wagons were returned with the dead bodies to Tirur. These bodies were laid to rest in Khabristan of the mosque nearby.
