Nehru Trophy Boat race is a popular Vallam Kali held in the Alappuzha, Kerala. In malayalam it is also known as Vallam Kali (വള്ളംകളി). The race in hel Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. This popular event of the race is the competition among Chundan Vallams (Snake Boats). So this boat race is also referred as snake Boat Race. Some Other types boats which participating in various events of the race are Churulan vallam (ചുണ്ടന് വള്ളം), Odi vallam (ഒടി വള്ളം), (Vaipu Vallam), Vadakkanody (വടക്കനോടി) Vallam and Kochu Vallam (കൊച്ചു വള്ളം. The race conducted on the second Saturday of August every year is a major tourist attraction.
History Of Nehru Trophy Boat Race
The first prime minister of Independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru visited Kerala in 1952. He was given a good reception by the people of alleppey (Alappuzha), followed by the big snake-boats. So Jwaharlal Nehru donated a Rolling Trophy by having a thrill in the boad race. Shape of the trophy is excactly same as the snake boat (chundan vallam). The trophy is make up of silver and wooden. The trophy will be handed over by winner to winner.
